Coming Soon...

Planting onion sets and strawberry plants are next on the to-do list for the school garden.

As the growing season marches on, we'll be seeking volunteers for preparing, planting, weeding, watering, and fix-it projects.

If you or your group is willing to help with any of the above, whether for an hour or on a regular basis, please contact Meaghan Gustafson at gustafsonm@lafarge.k12.wi.us. We appreciate our community's support of the school garden project at La Farge Schools!

Gardening Season Has Begun!

On Wednesday, May 8th, Mr. Fowell and his Intro to Ag class invited the first graders and their teachers Ms. Gustafson and Mr. Watters to help plant the five varieties of seed potatoes that were generously donated to our school garden program by Driftless Organics!

It was a beautiful day and a lot of fun. The high schoolers put up stakes and lines and dug holes, and the first graders dropped in the potatoes and covered them up. Both groups will be back to check on the plants once they're up and to help take care of them throughout the summer.  We are looking forward to "homegrown" french fries, baked potatoes, and potato wedges when school resumes in September.

Potato Planting at the School Garden!

The kindergarten and first grade classes were the first student group to plant something in the new school garden!
We walked up this afternoon and had beautiful weather for potato planting. Click here for the full story and more pictures!

Success!

The Garden Groundbreaking Event was a huge success! Thank you Ms. Donovan and Mrs. Muller for helping coordinate the vent, to all the classes that made the trek up the hill, and thank you to the many Organic Valley employees that showed their support by taking the time to come.

Garden Updates: Noelle Kehoe, OV employee, is on board to help us enter into the Chefs Move to Schools program!

Efforts continued yesterday on our existing garden features. Mr. Wright's Plants and Soils class was back to continue their work on the raised beds. Some kids helped "liberate" the growing aspargus spears from their weedy beds!  That's now two down and one to go. Thank you Raspberry C. for serving as project photographer. And congratulations to Andras G. for providing the first officially approved garden related community service time.

Stay tuned for news about an official garden groundbreaking ceremony!

If you are interested in helping out with the La Farge School Garden project, there is follow-up meeting tentatively scheduled for Monday, April 2nd at 6pm.
